In 1801-1917 Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) was occupied and has lost its independence - autocephaly under Russian Empire. GOC was headed and governed by so-called "Egzarkhos"-es appointed from the Holy Synod of Russia. To avoid the conflict with Georgian people Russians gave Egzarkhos' throne to Metropolitan Varlam (Eristavi, 1811 - 1817 ) who was Georgian by origin. Next 17 Metropolitans and Archbishops were all Russians who didn't even know Georgian language. These years are known as Russification of Georgian church - The Divine Liturgy was replaced to served in Russian and even more, many Russian metropolitans destroyed walls of icons with ancient paintings of Georgian iconography and repainted with new "Russian style" icons in the churches. In 1917 KIRION III (Sadzaglishvili) renounced independence of Georgian Church but he was killed after one year in the Martkofi Monastery. However fortunately, GOC have returned its' independence and is ruled by Georgian Patriarchs till now.
